On his debut album, 2013s Colonial Patterns, the most exciting tracks were the ones that seemed the most unkempt and overgrown: Instead of technos reliable, rectilinear grid, his structures followed mossier geometries, like paving stones forced aside by weeds, or a trellis sagging under the weight of rampant morning glory.įor Those of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have) is ambient music through and throughthough its informed by a memory of club music, which hangs over it like a ringing in the ears. Like a secret whispered in your ear while standing too close to the sound system, it was all the more exciting for the parts of the transmission that were garbled, or simply lost, on their journey from his machines to our ears. ![]() It was a fantasy of club music, a perspective schooled by records and YouTube and hearsay, and whatever it lacked in polish, it more than made up for in its suggestiveness. I have retired to one of the quieter parts of Ireland now so I dont get out as much as I used too but the list is still going to be naturally top heavy as electronic music spread more rapidly from the 90s onwards. Im sure theres loads missing here, the list is of course entirely dependant on both my exposure and tastes but if someone discovers at least one album they havent heard of before and enjoys it then itll have been worth the time and effort. ![]()
